I really liked the way the book is written. It’s simple, clear and easy to follow. Author shows a way to organize accounts and control extra expenditure via family cash planning. The use of examples to explain the point is quite nicely done in a short book. The book does reference spreadsheets as a tool to implement the given plan, if the reader decides to do so and YES, basic knowledge of spreadsheets is required to use them but it’s clearly mentioned in the book. I am not sure yet I will follow these spreadsheets exactly as they stand out, but I will definitely use them to organize my account information. The author has given his email address in case help is needed with spreadsheets and to me it’s a good approach to stand and support your work. One other good thing about this book is you don’t necessarily have to know lots about accounting to understand. Additionally, I loved the basis of the book that says “personal finance is 80% behavior”. Very True!Product details

Richard Collins book is useful for those looking for a practical way of tracking family expenses in real time. His hypothetical family has many income streams, including self-employment and contracting, and will be especially beneficial to families with similar circumstances. He mentions other budgeting gurus in his book, including Dave Ramsey - what he offers that those programs don't is a way to track taxes throughout the year so that you aren't surprised by the tax bill on April 15th. For that alone the book is worth the read.
Although I have not yet attempted to implement his suggestions, his explanations seem simple and straightforward. In addition, he appears approachable and willing to help each reader with any questions - he supplies his email several times and encourages readers to communicate any questions they may have. He has hyperlinks throughout the book of spreadsheets in Excel that will help implement his system. However as he points out, the spreadsheets don't work well on s, and would be more helpful viewed on a computer screen - in fact they are in color and my old isn't, so emailing the author as he encourages you to do would be best.
What makes this book stand out from others I have read, is that it does not presuppose knowledge of accounting procedures. The author says, “There’s a trade-off between clarity and creating morass of detail. I’ve tried to present this material at a comfortable learning level assuming you know how to download your banking information and that you are familiar with Excel.” He goes on to urge readers with additional questions to email him so that he can give personal help.
The Family Cash Plan, as described here by its originator, Richard Collins, has two key elements the first is an Excel worksheet, which you must update weekly with current banking information and reflecting cash ending balances for the next 12 weeks; the second is a federal income tax algorithm. In keeping with the keeping it simple tone of the plan, the author tells us, “Don’t recoil at the term algorithm; it’s simply a step by step solution to a problem.”
I have found this to be a helpful and informative book.
As far as a book on personal finances go, the language used is concise and clear to the reader...if they have a working knowledge of both tax laws and Excel. He takes a subject many find difficult to understand and renders it down to its most basic components. The book is geared towards a weekly budget, but reviews 4 weeks at a time, the current week and the upcoming 3 weeks. I made my way through it, but a variety of the situations of the "family" given as an example will not apply to many people, such as the secondary jobs as writers of some type. However, it does give you a place to start from, and the author gives his email address multiple times throughout the book offering to clarify any questions they have, as well as promoting himself to assist you with getting started with the program for a small fee. It isn't a bad place to start, but the information is fairly specific to a particular subset of families.
